Tour in the liberated lands
Between beauty and resistance to the mafias
Naples and Caserta

The NCO (Nuova Cooperazione Organizzata) has been promoting, accompanying and inspiring the creation of numerous non-profit companies for years, bringing to life a network that welcomes citizens, students, researchers and organised groups who wish to know and share paths of rebirth and promotion of the territory and the people.

The NCO now offers the possibility of enjoying genuine responsible tourism itineraries to discover the “Lands of Don Peppe Diana”, a priest killed in 1994 by the camorra.

These itineraries show visitors the good territorial practices regarding confiscated goods, and also the local gastronomic and wine specialties, and the artistic and cultural beauties of the Campania region.

Visitors will discover a new side to the territory, accompanied along the route by the managers of the social cooperatives located in San Cipriano d’Aversa (Nuova Casa Organizzata – managed by the Albanova cooperative) and in Maiano di Sessa Aurunca (Fattoria dei Sogni – managed by the Al di là dei sogni cooperative).

You will have the opportunity to discover unique cultural and territorial treasures, often off the beaten tourist track, and meet people and associations who are fighting to recover their traditions and values in lands where organised crime has dominated, and sometimes still dominates.

Casal di Principe, the town from which the tour departs, is a small town situated in a plain; the sea is a few kilometres away and it is close to Naples, Caserta, Capua and all the most famous historical-archaeological and scenic sites of the provinces of Caserta and Naples.

In a unique historical and scenic context, one has the opportunity to get to the bottom of the complex issues related to organised crime, and the efforts of the territorial network of civil society to counter this phenomenon.

In the 1980s in Campania, the acronym “Nuova Camorra Organizzata” represented a criminal structure organised to destroy and impoverish the territories. Today, the acronym “NCO” (Nuova Cucina Organizzata or Nuova Cooperazione Organizzata, but also Nuova Comunicazione Organizzata) is synonymous with a reality that is organising itself to restore rights, dignity and income, starting from the last.

The participants in the Tour will reach out to this reality: they will spend a week emersed in experiences of social commitment, a deepening of the issues of the fight against the mafia, and knowledge of the territories involved.

Combining culture and leisure, education and information, they will experience the “unknown” part of “our land” with excursions to the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Monumental Belvedere of San Leucio, the Amphitheatre and the Gladiator Museum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, the catacombs of San Gennaro and the Sanità district in Naples, the Piscina Mirabilis and the Casina Vanvitelliana, mystical places totally nestled in the magmatic context of the Phlegrean Fields, and finally the ascent of the crest of Vesuvius after visiting what now remains of the mythical Pompeii.

Facing these realities, the people who work there, but above all the subjective stories of the fragile people who find in these places their space and their human development, has a considerable educational and formative value. The confiscated property is therefore no longer considered only as the consequence of a judicial process, but as a “lived” place, i.e., a physical space and a space of the soul where there exist lives, feelings, fears, and where hopes develop. Where problems and solutions meet. Where, above all, from weakness, crime, fragility, and dilemma, comes the rebirth, the hope, the physical and spiritual reconstruction of not only people, but also places, territories, and social contexts.

As to the Tour proposal, in summer time, it is possible to do the excursion to the excavations of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in one day (very tiring though). In the winter months, on the other hand, there are 2 specific days, one Pompeii and the other Vesuvius, reorganizing the entire program, replacing some other excursions and making the experience more suited to the season.
